Organization of Blog plus Highlights!

Bonjour tout le monde!

I have been working hard to create this blog for my middle school French students at Carolina Day School in Asheville, NC for the past month or so.  I have tried to give my students all the information they need to learn the French language and culture, and to succeed in my class.

I decided to write up a brief explanation of how my blog is organized for my students and their parents.  After doing so, I realized I should share it with the entire French learning and teaching community, so that any French Student or Teacher can take advantage of the resources available.

Here is a summary of how the blog is currently organized, highlighting the best links of each section:
  • UPPER TABS
    • Les Vidéos
      • "Avez-vous déjà vu..." series are what I start my Monday mornings with.  Watch these zany animated shorts that propose different life scenarios that no one has ever experienced.  For example, watch the video I showed my students this Monday: Avez-vous déjà vu un film d'horreur de bonbons?
      • Why Learn French videos, the most convincing being this one
      • "Panique au Village" is series of quirky Belgian animated shorts about a the plastic figurine characters of Cowboy, Indien, cheval.  Watch Cob'Hulk, a big favorite
      • "Têtes à Claques" is a Canadian series about bizarre characters such as Gabriel and Samuel, these incredibly annoying brothers who contest any any adult ever says or does in their life.  À l'école is one of the first videos I showed students last year that first got them hooked.
      • Les Animaux Rigolos, narrated funny animal videos, such as this one, Les Chats Ninjas
      • Les Pubs, including commercials of all sorts, including this amusing Gadoua commercial.
      • Les Histoires Pour Enfants, to which I hope to add more narrated children's stories soon, but Pierre Lapin (Peter Rabbit) is fantastic!
      • La Culture, highlighting some cultural particularities of French and Francophones, such as this explanation of "faire la bise".  More to come soon.
      • Random, including the breathtaking The Human Spider
      • L'Histoire, with a couple of music videos that teach about French history, such as The French Revolutlon
      • Extra! video series, the "Friends"-like TV episodes made by the BBC that are about this rich American guy who moved into apartment of his French pen pal and her roommate.  These are perfect for your French 1 students.  If you don't have time to show the videos in class your kids can just go to the links and watch it for homework.  Watch the first episode here
    • La Musique
      • Les Chansons Populaires, with the best music videos suitable to adolescent French beginners, such as the hit French Cancan by Inna Modja. I will definitely be adding a lot to this section.
      • Les Chansons de Vocabulaire, with tons of catchy vocabulary songs that helps students memorize vocabulary with great accents, and I will be adding more as the year progresses.  One of my favorites is the numbers 1-20 song at the beach by Alain le Lait.
      • Les Chansons de Grammaire, grammar songs to teach verb conjugations, my 8th graders' favorite being  "le verbe aller"
      • Les Comptines, with most nursery rhymes subtitled with fabulous illustrations that help tell the story, including the 5th graders' favorite, "Frère Jacques", of course
